My Unforgettable Brazilian Adventure

My Unforgettable Brazilian Adventure

Introduction

I’ve always dreamed of exploring Brazil: the rhythm, the colors, the breathtaking nature, and of course, the legendary Carnival. This past February, I finally made it happen. I traveled from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) with a stopover in Rome to reach Brazil, embarking on an adventure filled with vibrant city life, roaring waterfalls, dense Amazonian rainforest, and the exhilarating beats of samba.

Before diving into the details, I want to give special thanks to our tour leader, Shahab Cheraghi. He’s an incredibly experienced guide who’s visited Brazil more than 40 times, and his expertise was invaluable for navigating a country where safety can sometimes be a concern. If you plan on a similar journey, I highly recommend traveling with a knowledgeable guide like him.

In this travelogue, I’ll walk you through my day-by-day journey, complete with stories, fun facts, and personal experiences. I’ll also include (in my actual Medium post) plenty of photos I took along the way to give you a real taste of this amazing country.

So, pack your imaginary bags, and come along as I relive this incredible Brazilian escapade!

Day 1: Amsterdam — Rome — São Paulo

I left Amsterdam at 17:55 on an ITA Airways flight, buzzing with excitement despite the late-afternoon departure. After a swift transfer in Rome, I boarded the long overnight leg to Brazil. The stretch across the Atlantic is no joke, but it flew by — literally — thanks to a captivating read and a mini movie marathon. I devoured an eye-opening article titled Agents in AI: My Mid-Flight Discoveries, then queued up a couple of comfort-film classics. Before I knew it, the captain announced our descent and we touched down in São Paulo at 06:25 local time.

By the time I reached my 4-star hotel, I was equal parts exhilarated and exhausted, ready to crash for a few hours before the city’s buzz pulled me back out the door.

Day 2 : Exploring São Paulo

My first Brazilian morning began with sunshine and a hearty breakfast. Then it was off to explore São Paulo, the economic powerhouse of Brazil.

  1. Historic Downtown: European-inspired architecture and lively cafés caught my eye. Street art here is vibrant, often showcasing the city’s diverse and multicultural spirit.
  2. Mercado Municipal (Traditional Market): A feast for the senses! Exotic fruits, delicious pastries, and the famous mortadella sandwich are must-tries. Vendors are passionate about sharing their products — and their stories.
  3. Parque Ibirapuera: São Paulo’s own “Central Park.” Lush lawns, jogging paths, and small lakes make this a perfect spot to relax amid the city bustle.
  4. Paulista Avenue: A testament to the city’s modern, fast-paced energy. High-rises, shopping centers, and street performers combine into a captivating urban tapestry.

After a full day, I returned to the hotel to rest up for the next leg of the journey.

Day 3 : Flight to Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

Early the next morning, I headed to the airport for a flight to Foz do Iguaçu, near the legendary Iguazu Falls. After checking into another 4-star hotel, the afternoon was open for optional tours:

  • Bird Park: Home to toucans, parrots, and the majestic harpy eagle, among others. Walking through giant aviaries was a surreal experience.
  • Helicopter Ride: For the adventurous, soaring above the falls by helicopter offers a unique perspective and jaw-dropping photos.

That evening, I enjoyed the local ambiance of Foz do Iguaçu, feeling the excitement build for the next day’s waterfall adventure.

Day 4: Iguazu Falls Adventure

The day began with a hearty breakfast before heading out to Iguazu Falls — a massive series of waterfalls on the Brazil-Argentina border.

  • Walkways and Viewing Platforms: On the Brazilian side, well-maintained pathways offer panoramic vistas. Mist from the falls often creates vibrant rainbows, adding a dreamy quality to every photo.
  • Boat Ride : Some daredevils venture almost under the falls on a speedboat. Prepare to be soaked (and exhilarated)!

That evening, I attended the Rafain Dinner Show, complete with lively music and dance performances that showcased the rich cultural tapestry of South America.

Day 5 : Off to Manaus (Gateway to the Amazon)

After a memorable time at the falls, it was time to fly (via São Paulo) to Manaus in the heart of the Amazon. The city of Manaus juxtaposes old-world charm from the 19th-century rubber boom with modern Brazilian culture. I checked into a 4-star hotel and joined friends (including our amazing guide, Shahab Cheraghi) for a relaxed evening, grabbing dinner at a nearby mall — a surprisingly modern touch in a city so close to the rainforest.

Day 6: Into the Amazon — Night Safari

A morning boat ride took me along the Amazon River to the Meeting of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro merges with the sandy-hued Rio Solimões — yet the waters flow side by side without mixing for several kilometers. It’s a natural wonder and a fascinating sight!

From there, we continued deeper into the jungle, where a cozy Amazon lodge awaited. After settling in, we went on an evening:

  • River Safari: As darkness fell, our guide expertly steered us into the tributaries, searching for glowing caiman eyes along the riverbanks. The sounds of the jungle at night were simultaneously thrilling and a little eerie — a must-do experience.

Day 7: Jungle Trek & Wildlife Encounters

Morning brought a guided jungle walk, offering insight into survival techniques, medicinal plants, and local indigenous lore. We spotted curious monkeys, heard the distinctive calls of the Hoatzin (aptly nicknamed the “stinkbird”), and glimpsed a languid three-toed sloth in the canopy.

After lunch, a small motorboat carried us through narrow channels and flooded forests. Exotic birds, butterflies, and occasionally playful monkeys peered at us from the lush greenery.

Day 8 (Friday): Indigenous Tribes & Swimming with Pink Dolphins

After breakfast, we made our way back to Manaus. A highlight of this journey was visiting a local indigenous community, where we witnessed traditional dances and crafts. Their warmth and pride in their heritage was inspiring.

Later, the dream of seeing Amazon pink dolphins called botos — up close came true. Witnessing their gentle, playful nature was indescribably magical.

Day 9: Heading to Rio de Janeiro

Back at the airport once more for a flight to Rio de Janeiro (with a brief stop in São Paulo). From the moment I landed, Rio’s energy was palpable: beaches, samba rhythms, and the distant drumbeats of Carnival. I checked into a 4-star hotel close to Copacabana Beach, eager for the days ahead.

Day 10: Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf & Escadaria Selarón

A grand tour of Rio de Janeiro was on the agenda:

  1. Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor): Crowned one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it stands atop Corcovado Mountain with arms wide open. The panorama of Rio’s beaches, lagoons, and sprawl below was unforgettable.
  2. Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar): The cable car ride offered sweeping vistas of the city. From the top, I felt as though I was staring at an iconic postcard — endless blue waters, dotted with sailboats.
  3. Carnival Fever: Since it was Carnival season, we caught glimpses (and sounds!) of Samba parades and street parties. The city vibrated with music, laughter, and color.
  4. Escadaria Selarón (The Red Steps): Created by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, these famous tiled steps in Lapa are a tribute to the Brazilian people. Bold, vibrant, and full of global mosaic pieces, it’s an absolute must-see.

Day 11 : Beach Time

The day started on Copacabana Beach, where I indulged in fresh coconut water while soaking up the Brazilian sun. For thrill-seekers, paragliding or a helicopter tour over Rio is an unforgettable way to glimpse the city from above.

Meanwhile, on the sand, it was a festival of volleyball games, surfers, and vendors selling everything from bikinis to grilled cheese skewers (queijo coalho).

Day 12 : Farewell to Rio — Heading Back via Rome

The morning was mine to savor Rio’s final charms, one last walk along Copacabana, taking in the crashing waves and the echo of distant samba drums.

In the afternoon, I headed to the airport to begin my journey home. This time, I took an ITA Airways flight from Rio (GIG) to Rome, then from Rome back to Amsterdam, arriving the next day.

Days 13 & 14: Long Journey Home

After the transatlantic flight, I touched down in Amsterdam around mid-morning. Though the jet lag hit hard, my heart was brimming with memories — misty waterfalls, echoing samba rhythms, Amazonian river cruises, and the kaleidoscope of Carnival.

Just like that, my Brazilian odyssey came to a close. Even now, whenever I scroll through my photos, I can practically smell the tropical air and hear the samba beats.

Final Thoughts & Travel Tips

Brazil is a land of contrasts. Mega-cities pulsating with energy, wild jungles teeming with wildlife, and beaches as warm and welcoming as the locals themselves. Throw in Carnival season, and the experience is utterly unforgettable.

A crucial piece of advice: due to the complexities of travel in Brazil and the variations in safety conditions, I highly recommend going with a knowledgeable, trustworthy guide. In my case, traveling with Shahab Cheraghi made all the difference. Having someone who knows the language, culture, and local logistics inside out turned what might have been a daunting solo journey into a seamless, exhilarating adventure.

Obrigado (thank you) for joining me on this journey.

Bom viagem! Safe travels!
